The program identifies and assists youth ages 11 to 27 years of age who meet US Department of Education guidelines and who have the potential to succeed in postsecondary education. The program provides academic, career, and financial aid advising, tutoring, college campus visits, assistance in preparing for college entrance examinations, financial aid planning, and assistance in completing college admissions forms. The goal of the Talent Search Program is to increase the number of eligible youth who graduate from high school and continue on to postsecondary institutions of their choice.
Mineral Area College hosts two TRIO Talent Search (TS) programs. TS 1 was established in 2002 and TS 2 was established in 2006. They are part of the TRIO programs each funded by the U. S. Department of Education through a $250,000/yr grant for five years. Mineral Area College’s contribution is approximately 2 percent of the total budget.
The objective of the programs is to help low-income and potential first-generation college students prepare for and succeed in an education program after high school (university, community college, technical or vocational school.) TS not only provides encouragement and support, but educational guidance in areas such as study skills, career exploration, financial aid resources, college orientation, and admission process.
Our services are FREE of charge but participation does require a time commitment from both students and parents in order for students to take advantage of everything that TS offers.
TS Advisors will visit your school regularly during the school day for group workshops. The schedule for these visits will be coordinated through your school counselor. You will receive notice of the specific dates and locations of your meetings with your TS Advisor.
